Ship management questions
Universal Ship Management is an India-based provider of international technical ship management, crew management and seafarer labour supply, working to BIMCO SHIPMAN, MLC 2006 and ISO 9001:2015. This site explains how that full-service model works for ship owners.
Full-service ship management means one provider handles the technical side (superintendence, planned maintenance, drydocking, Class and Flag State compliance) and the crew side (manning, vetting, training, welfare, payroll). Universal Ship Management services are organised exactly this way.
Universal Ship Management quotes an onboarding timeline of 14 to 30 days, depending on the vessel, its Class status and its location. Share the vessel type and start date with the operations team to get a confirmed plan for your ship.
Yes. Universal Ship Management covers ship and crew management at Universal Ship Management, maritime training at the Universal training and Merchant Navy career pathways at Universal careers, so owners, crews and cadets are served by one connected team.
Call +91 98920 82041 or message the same number on WhatsApp with the vessel type, the services you need and your timing. The Universal Ship Management contact page lists email and form options, and a professional replies within one working day.
Yes. Universal Ship Management provides international ship management from India for owners and operators worldwide, with crew drawn from India and licensed seafarer labour supplied to vessels abroad. Details of the international labour supply service explain how that works.

Technical management questions
Technical ship management covers superintendence, planned maintenance (PMS), drydocking, Class and Flag State compliance, and machinery reliability and fuel diagnostics. It keeps the vessel seaworthy and compliant. See the full scope on the technical management page.
A planned maintenance system schedules inspections, overhauls and spares against running hours and calendar intervals so machinery is serviced before it fails. It is a core part of technical ship management and produces the records that Class and Flag State surveyors ask for.
A superintendent is the shore-based technical lead for a vessel: they inspect the ship, review maintenance, agree repair specifications, manage dry-dock work and keep Class and Flag State matters on track. Dry-dock superintendence is also offered as a standalone service.
They spot declining engine performance and rising fuel use early, so repairs are planned instead of urgent and fuel cost and emissions stay under control. Universal Ship Management includes both within technical management, alongside IMO DCS data reporting.
The technical team coordinates Class and Flag State surveys, tracks certificate expiry dates and acts as the liaison with the society and the Flag administration, so the owner is not chasing paperwork. Class and Flag State liaison is listed among the other ship management services.
Universal Ship Management contracts are primarily BIMCO SHIPMAN, the standard ship management agreement, plus tailored crew management agreements where needed. Ask the operations desk how the agreement would apply to your vessel type and trading pattern.
04 · Crew
Crew and manning questions
Crew management covers STCW and MLC manning, credential vetting (CDC, references and medicals), training, welfare, travel logistics and payroll. Everything from first rank request to repatriation is handled by one team. Read the detail on the Universal crew management page.
It means supplying seafarers whose certificates meet STCW training and watchkeeping standards and whose employment conditions follow MLC 2006. Each placement is checked against both frameworks before joining, as described under crew management at Universal Ship Management.
Vetting checks the Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC), professional references and medical fitness before a seafarer is placed on a vessel. This protects the owner from certificate and fitness problems later. The process sits inside crew management and is repeated for each new joiner.
Yes. International labour supply includes certified electricians, welders qualified in 6G, TIG and MIG, structural fitters, and skilled and general helpers. Tell the team the trade, number and dates through the international labour supply page.
Training is arranged through Universal training, which runs 200+ maritime courses across navigation and bridge, engineering and machinery, and safety and operations, including Bridge Team Management Refresher and Enclosed Space Entry. Browse the full course catalogue.
Welfare support, travel logistics for joining and repatriation, and crew payroll are all part of the crew management contract, so seafarers are looked after before, during and after a contract. The crew management service explains each function.
05 · Dry-dock
Dry-dock and repair questions
Dry-dock superintendence means a technical superintendent represents the owner at the yard: agreeing the repair specification, monitoring work quality, controlling variations and signing off completion. Universal Ship Management lists it as a standalone service on its services page.
A riding repair squad is a team of certified technicians who board a vessel and carry out repairs while it is at anchor or on passage, avoiding a separate yard call. Universal Ship Management supplies such squads; the services overview gives the scope.
Yes. Riding squads can join a vessel at anchor or en route, depending on port access and permissions, which keeps downtime short. Share the vessel position, the work required and the timing with the operations desk so the squad and travel can be planned.
Certified electricians, welders qualified in 6G, TIG and MIG, structural fitters and skilled helpers are available through Universal’s international labour supply service and can form the core of a repair squad for hull, pipework and electrical jobs.
Plan as early as the vessel’s Class survey window allows, because specification, yard slot and spares all need lead time. A technical audit at the start of management helps fix the date. The technical management team can build the drydocking plan with you.
Call +91 98920 82041 or use WhatsApp with the vessel name, position, the defect and the trades needed. The 24/7 dispatch desk at Universal Ship Management routes urgent requests to a superintendent so a squad and spares can be arranged quickly.
06 · Audits
Audits and procurement questions
It is an independent technical inspection of a vessel before you commit to buy: the condition of hull and machinery, maintenance records and Class and Flag State status. It shows the real cost of ownership. Universal Ship Management lists it among its ship management services.
It reviews structure, main engine and auxiliaries, maintenance history, certificates, outstanding Class recommendations and records, then reports findings and likely repair costs. Because the surveyor works for the buyer, the result is impartial. Request one through the operations team.
A ship with hidden defects or open Class recommendations can cost far more than the discount that attracted you. An independent audit puts a technical specialist on your side before money moves. The same team can then take the vessel into technical management.
It covers sourcing and supplying marine spares, stores and equipment to the vessel on a planned basis, tied to the planned maintenance system so parts arrive before they are needed. It is listed under other services at Universal Ship Management.
The technical team acts as the owner’s point of contact with the Class society and Flag administration: arranging surveys, tracking certificates and handling recommendations. That keeps the vessel compliant without the owner managing every deadline. See technical management for the scope.
Send the vessel type, age and location, or the parts and stores list, to the operations desk by phone, WhatsApp or the Universal Ship Management contact page. You get a reply within one working day with the next steps.
07 · Compliance
Compliance questions
It works to BIMCO SHIPMAN, MLC 2006, ISO 9001:2015, STCW, IMO DCS, SEEMP Part III and CII. Together these cover contracts, seafarer conditions, quality, training, fuel reporting and energy efficiency. The Universal Ship Management site lists them against each service.
BIMCO SHIPMAN is the widely used standard ship management agreement that sets out the manager’s duties, fees and liabilities toward the owner. Universal Ship Management contracts are primarily BIMCO SHIPMAN plus tailored crew agreements; ask the operations team for specifics.
IMO DCS is the data collection system for ship fuel consumption, SEEMP Part III is the ship energy efficiency management plan for carbon intensity, and CII rates operational carbon intensity. Universal’s technical management tracks the data that feeds all three.
The Maritime Labour Convention sets minimum standards for seafarers’ working and living conditions, including employment agreements, hours of rest, accommodation, food and medical care. Crew placed through Universal crew management is aligned to it.
ISO 9001:2015 is the international quality management standard. In ship management it means documented processes, controlled records and continual improvement across technical and crew work, which gives owners traceable evidence. Universal Ship Management applies its protocols across the services it lists.
STCW sets the training and certification standard for seafarers, and refresher and specialist courses keep certificates relevant. Universal training offers 200+ courses, including Enclosed Space Entry and Ballast Water Treatment Systems; see the featured courses.
